Jutting over the Colorado River and nestled against Canyonlands National Park is Dead Horse Point State Park which comprises more than 5,000 acres of high desert. At an elevation of 5,900 feet (1,800 m) there are expansive views of the canyons and river that are 2,000 feet below. This Park offers short scenic overlooks and miles of hiking and mountain biking trails.
Dead Horse Point State Park was designated as an International Dark Sky Park in 2016. An International Dark Sky Park is a land possessing an exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment that is specifically protected for its scientific, natural, educational, cultural heritage, and/or public enjoyment. This ideal location; set on a plateau with mountains far in the distance and no cities within sight, make this Park a stargazing wonder.
